Review: Norwegian Long Haul Meals

Norwegian airlines premium economy class meal

This was my second experience with Norwegian flying long haul, you can read about my previous experience here. The last time I flew with Norwegian, I found the meals lacked quality, however, there’s been quite an improvement. I flew from Oslo to Bangkok in economy class to sample premium economy and economy class meals.

Norwegian do not offer any free meals in economy class, at the time of booking your ticket you can add bags, seats and meals at varying prices. Passengers travelling in premium economy class have meals included. You may add meals up to 72 hours before departure here.

ECONOMY CLASS

The airline knew I was onboard and loaded two economy class meals and two premium economy class meals for me to sample.

The economy class meal tray is quite basic, made of clear plastic that houses a three-course meal; a salad, main and pre-packaged dessert. You’re free to choose any drink to accompany your meal, and on longer flights, they will provide a second meal service.

The first meal consisted of roast beef with pepper sauce, marinated potatoes, carrots, grilled vegetables, a quinoa salad and white chocolate and raspberry truffle for dessert.

The second meal was a chicken fillet served with chilli onion sauce with rice and vegetables.

Norwegian airlines economy class breakfast

Before landing economy class can expect this simple breakfast bag that includes a ham and cheese sandwich, chocolate chip cookie and apple juice.

We eat with our eyes and the presentation of these meals was a little basic. The hot meals did taste good, the roast beef was tender and the chicken tasty.

Norwegian meals are pricey and similar to what you will pay on other low-cost airlines. The meals cost around €35 for both services and when you look at what you receive in return for your money, it’s hard to see the value.

PREMIUM ECONOMY

Although I was seated in economy, I sampled the premium economy class offering. Meals are served in a box instead of see-through plastic trays, and desserts feature locally sourced products.

The first meal was a wheat kernel salad with pomegranate, grilled beef top fillet with choron sauce, roasted potatoes, oven-baked peppers, and vegetables. For dessert, a handmade truffle rhubarb praline that is sourced locally.

The second meal was fish served with hollandaise sauce, potato, sugar snaps and carrots.

The grilled beef was a lovely dish with an array of flavours, and the fish was creamy and delicious, I thought that the locally sourced desserts were a nice touch. These meals are packaged well, but a far cry from premium economy class meals on other airlines.

A big thanks to the inflight service team at Norwegian for arranging all the meal tastings for this flight.
